20+ Low Waste Savory Snacks

Kids are back at school and days are busier than ever. On hectic days, having easy snacks on hand is essential to avoiding drive throughs and vending machines. Snacks can be savory, sweet, salty, or whatever craving you may have. In no particular order, here are 20+ savory snacks that are low waste, vegan, and portable for wherever life takes you.

  • Bell peppers, cucumbers, celery, carrots, or other seasonal vegetables with hummus or homemade ranch style dip
  • Apples or celery with a seed or nut butter
  • Savory homemade trail mix
  • Home popped popcorn topped with salt, nutritional yeast, or various spice blends

  • Homemade kale chips
  • Roasted garbanzo beans with or without seasonings added.
  • Homemade or bulk purchased crackers
  • A handful of nuts
  • Corn chips and guacamole (you can lower waste even further by making your own guacamole or even baking your own corn tortilla chips)

  • Corn chips with homemade salsa (just make sure you have everything packed in a well sealed to-go container before you take this snack with you for the day)
  • Quick pickled vegetables
  • Potato skin chips
  • Roasted pumpkin seeds (bonus points if you make them from local pumpkins bought in the fall)
  • Thinly sliced bread paired with homemade pesto or romesco sauce

  • Avocado with everything seasoning sprinkled on top
  • Avocado topped with lemon and sliced serrano peppers
  • Olives bought package free or in a reusable or recyclable container
  • Soft pretzels topped with salt
  • Steamed edamame sprinkled with salt

As always, check for bulk bins at your local grocery store to see if they carry package free savory snacks. You can also check with locally owned restaurants and cafes; some may be willing to put chips, dips, pretzels, or other items from their establishment directly into containers you’ve brought from home.
